Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I plant common milkweed and not butterfly weed?

By all means, do plant butterfly weed and other milkweed species in your garden. Butterfly weed is very attractive and can be used to attract monarchs and feed their caterpillars. However, our experience has been that the leaves are simply to narrow to support many caterpillars. Caterpillars are ravenous feeders as they reach full size, and the large leaves common milkweed are much more suitable for supporting them. Common milkweed also grows well under most conditions in Ann Arbor gardens.

When can I expect monarchs in my garden?

Usually in about the first week of June, the first monarchs will begin appearing. To track their progress across the country, try the following map hosted by Journey North: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/maps/monarch_spring2008.html
